Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency
Solutions: design/identity
Verticals: government

The Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA) was created by the National Capital Revitalization and Self-Government Improvement Act of 1997 with a mission to increase public safety, prevent crime, reduce recidivism, and support the fair administration of justice in close collaboration with the community. CSOSA provides supervisory and treatment services to over 26,000 individuals on pretrial release, probation and parole in the District of Columbia. In August of 2004, this agency celebrates its third year as an independent federal agency, the newest federal agency other than the Homeland Security Department. CSOSA needed a redesign of their public Web site to better promote the agency’s community involvement and make information easier for visitors to find. As a relatively new agency, the new design needed to be one that would be useful to members of the community, but would also be effective in raising awareness of this agency within other Federal agencies. In addition to the redesign, Fig Leaf also reviewed the manner in which content is posted to the organization’s Web site. In the agency’s current process, there is only one staff member responsible for all updates to the site content. This reliance on one staff member limits the amount of new updates that can be posted to the site based on their schedule. The secondary goals of the redesign initiative were to make the site content easier to update and accessible to more staff.

A creative session involving Fig Leaf and key stakeholders within CSOSA provided detailed business and branding requirements for the new Web site. Fig Leaf worked with the CSOSA team to create designs that represented the community-centric mission of the agency through both imagery and better arrangement of pertinent information. Management of the design, content, and revised site architecture will be handled through Macromedia Contribute, allowing CSOSA non-technical staff to easily update content in a straightforward, user-friendly rich-text environment.

This project is still in progress however, the following are the results we expect:

  • A design that better encompasses the spirit of the work that CSOSA performs in the community
  • An improved representation of the agency’s mission
  • The positive feeling of community-based interest to boost the agency’s effectiveness with the public
  • Improved ease of use for content updates to allow more regular updates of information and fresher content to be posted thereby generally increasing traffic to the site and interest in both CSOSA and its goals
  • Reduced reliance on the IT staff member formerly burdened with content changes, thus providing that individual with more time to focus on making other valuable contributions.
