NIH NHLBI case study

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at NIH desired a Video Blogging system would have functionality similar to YouTube but live on the NHLBI Web site.

The NHLBI American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) website already featured videos from ARRA participating researchers but acquisition and encoding of the videos was a manual process. The NHLBI hired Fig Leaf Software to collaborate and create a Video Blogging system to handle videos automatically.

The system provides an interface for authenticated users to upload their videos. The system will automatically convert videos into the Adobe Flash video format, generate captions, and produce transcript text while videos are being uploaded. In addition, The system allows authorized NHLBI staff to review and approve/disapprove videos and review/edit caption and transcript text. The system houses converted and approved videos for streaming and stores information associated with the videos for web publishing. Below is a brief list of functionality included in the system:

  • Administrative Interface
  • User Generated Video Uploads
  • Workflow and Approval Process for Submitted Videos
  • User Registration and Authentication
  • Upload and Conversion of Video Content with the Adobe Flash Media Encoding Server
  • Network Speed Detection for Automatic Playback Speed Controls
  • Video Playback with Open / Closed Captioning
  • Automatic Video Transcript Creation
  • Ability to Upload Videos to YouTube with Open Caption Embedded in Video
  • 508 Compliant Web Interface

This project is ongoing.
