NYC Economic Development Corporation Intranet
Solutions: content management, portal
Vertical: corporate, government, non-profit

New York City Economic Development Corporation's (NYCEDC) mission is to encourage economic growth in each of the five boroughs of New York City by strengthening the city's competitive position and facilitating investments that build capacity, generate prosperity and catalyze the economic vibrancy of city life as a whole.

Fig Leaf Software was engaged by NYCEDC to implement their vision for a content managed intranet/portal, working within an exceptionally tight budget, using a pre-existing design and deploying on a dual-node cluster using the CommonSpot content management server from Paperthin, Inc.  In addition, NYCEDC also needed the new CMS integrated with several pre-existing ColdFusion-based web applications.

Fig Leaf implemented NYCEDC's in-house design quickly and efficiently.  After a three-day on-site kickoff engagement, remote development continued at Fig Leaf's offices, culminating in a second three-day on-site deployment and hands-on training class for content contributors.  Fig Leaf customized the CommonSpot for Content Contributors course to match the layout and function of the NYCEDC deployment as well as delivered technical documentation for their internal IT development team.

Custom modules included:

  • Custom authentication that allows users to be authenticated against Microsoft Active Directory
  • Deployment of Fig Leaf's hierarchical metadata taxonomy subsystem allowing authors to categorize and search for content using a virtually unlimited number of categories and keywords.
  • Creation of a customizable portal page ("MyEDCis"), allowing end-users to create their own personalized navigation, view bulletins that are targeted at their department, and see a listing of content that meets custom criteria.
  • Redevelopment of a custom application that enables users to search and display content from newspapers, journals, and periodicals  that have been uploaded as PDF documents into CommonSpot
  • Development of a custom sortable datagrid that allows users to select from a variety of uploaded forms that have been uploaded into the CMS and marked in the system through the use of metadata
  • Creation of a number of render handlers that allow a contributor to easily divide a large block of content into easily readable "virtual pages" that are shown and hidden through Dynamic HTML.

The intranet launch was a resounding success. The system now contains thousands of new and updated content items with 30+ new items added daily. Ongoing technical support has been limited mostly to system maintenance, and minor additions and tweaking of delivered functionality.
