The Maryland State Bar (MSBA) is a voluntary, non-profit membership organization comprised of more than 24,000 attorneys, judges, law students, law firm administrators, and paralegals professionally active in the state of Maryland. MSBA’s mission is to effectively represent Maryland’s lawyers; provide member services; and promote professionalism and diversity in the legal profession, access to justice, service to the public, and respect for the rule of law. In order to best serve the organization’s audience, the MSBA hired Fig Leaf Software to redesign the public website and implement a content management system.
Fig Leaf began the project with a discovery phase to detail user experience needs, along with creative, technical and functional business requirements. The newly redesigned website has been designed to:
- Improve user’s ability to locate information
- Enhance search capabilities
- Create a responsive design to support desktop, tablet and mobile platforms
- Modernize the site’s appearance, projecting a clean and professional image
- Improve the ability for MSBA staff to easily update website content with a CMS
Fig Leaf helped the MBSA evaluate multiple CMS platforms to determine the best platform for the organization’s needs, given the organization’s in-house expertise, current technology platform and business requirements. MSBA selected the Ektron CMS platform because of its ease of use, extensibility and track record of supporting association clients.
As part of the discovery phase, Fig Leaf’s content strategy team worked with MSBA key stakeholders to audit the current site content. Based on the result of the content audit, the content strategy team worked with MSBA to develop a migration plan which would ensure that the new site has fresh, relevant content and the in-house knowledge on web content best practices.
The new site is rich with news, job postings and upcoming events, including upcoming CLE events, member events and public events. The Ektron based calendar enables visitors to view the calendar in a standard calendar or list view, both of which can be filtered and searched. Social media integration with Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube are available throughout the site.
With the revamp of the MSBA website and streamlining of content, the association is better prepared to serve its members. Since Fig Leaf implemented the new responsive design within the Ektron CMS, non-technical staff members are now able to quickly and easily manage and maintain site content based on their role.
MSBA members can now easily login to the system from the home page and quickly and easily access Fastcase legal research, member information, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) information. Members of the public can access legal resources, search the member directory and access the legal referral resources section.
